Brief Introduction of Straight Bore Nozzle

As we all know, blasting is the process of using abrasive materials with high-velocity wind to remove the concrete or the stain on the surface of the work piece. There are many types of blasting nozzles to achieve this process. They are straight bore nozzle, venturi bore nozzle, double Venturi nozzle, and other kinds of nozzle. In this article, the straight bore nozzle will be introduced briefly.

History

The history of the straight bore nozzles begins with a man, Benjamin Chew Tilghman, who started sandblasting around 1870 when he observed the abrasive wear on the windows caused by wind-blown desert. Tilghman realized that the high-velocity sand could work on hard materials. Then he started to design a machine that releases sand at high speed. The machine can concentrate wind flow into a small stream and out from the other end of the stream. After the pressured air is supplied through the nozzle, the sand can receive high velocity from the pressured air for productive blasting. This was the first sandblasting machine, and the nozzle used was called a straight bore nozzle.

Structure

A straight bore nozzle is made of two sections. One is the long tapered convening end to concentrate the air; the other is the flat straight section to release the pressured air. When the compressed air arrives at the long tapered convening end, it accelerates with abrasive materials. The convening end is a tapered shape. As the wind goes in, the end goes narrow. The compressed air generated high velocity and high impact in the flat straight section, which are applied to remove the extra materials from the surfaces.

Advantages & Disadvantages

Compared with other kinds of blasting nozzles, the straight bore nozzles have a simpler structure and are easier to manufacture. But as the most conventional nozzle, it has its shortcomings. Straight bore nozzles are not advanced as other types of nozzles, and when it works, the air released from the straight bore nozzle will not have that high pressure.

Applications

Straight bore nozzles are commonly used in blasts for spot blasting, weld shaping, and other intricate work. They can also be applied to blasting and removing the materials in a small area with a small stream.
